Storm Season Electrical Safety Tips for Newcastle
Newcastle's storm season brings heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds — all of which can damage your home's electrical system. Here's how to stay safe and protect your property.
Before the Storm
Prepare by: unplugging sensitive electronics (computers, TVs, modems), checking that outdoor power points have weatherproof covers, ensuring your safety switches are working (press the test button), and trimming trees near power lines (call Ausgrid for trees touching lines).
During a Storm
Stay away from electrical equipment and wiring. Don't use corded phones or appliances near windows. If power goes out, turn off appliances at the wall to prevent power surges when electricity is restored. Use battery-powered torches, not candles.
After a Storm
Check for fallen power lines — stay at least 8 metres away and call Ausgrid on 13 13 88. Inspect your property for water damage near electrical outlets, switchboards, and meter boxes. If you smell burning or see sparks, turn off the main switch and call an electrician immediately.
Surge Protection
Lightning strikes and power surges can destroy electronics and appliances worth thousands. A whole-home surge protector installed at your switchboard provides the first line of defence. These cost $300–$600 installed and can save you thousands in damaged equipment.
Power Outage Protocol
During an outage: check if neighbours are also affected (could be an Ausgrid issue), check your switchboard for tripped breakers, leave one light switched on so you know when power returns, and keep your fridge and freezer closed to preserve food.
Water and Electricity Don't Mix
After flooding or heavy rain, water can enter electrical components. Never touch wet electrical equipment. If water has entered your switchboard, meter box, or any outlets, have a licensed electrician inspect and test everything before restoring power.
