AC vs DC ceiling fan — which should I choose?
DC fans use up to 70% less power, are much quieter, have more speed options (usually 6), and typically include remote control and reverse mode. AC fans are cheaper upfront but noisier and less efficient. For bedrooms and daily-use spaces, DC is worth the extra $150–$300.
Can I install a ceiling fan myself?
No. In NSW, hard-wired ceiling fan installation is licensed electrical work under the Home Building Act. DIY installation voids insurance, is illegal, and creates serious fire and injury risks. Only a licensed electrician can legally install a fan.
Will a fan fit if I currently only have a light?
Usually yes, but the ceiling fixing point needs to support the fan's weight and vibration. Light-only fittings often aren't rated for this — we'll check and install a proper fan brace if required, at no surprise cost.
How big a fan do I need?
As a rule of thumb: rooms under 12m² use a 48" (1220mm) fan; 12–20m² use 52" (1320mm); 20–30m² use 56" (1420mm); bigger rooms need 60"+ or multiple fans. We'll advise based on room dimensions and ceiling height.
Do I need a wall switch or is remote enough?
Modern DC fans are usually controlled entirely by remote or app. However, we always recommend keeping at least a wall isolator so the fan can be fully powered down for cleaning or if the remote is lost.
How long does a fan installation take?
A straight replacement is 45–60 minutes. A new install from an existing light point is 1–1.5 hours. A brand new fan point with fresh cabling and a new switch is 2–3 hours.
Can I run fans on the same circuit as my lights?
