Newcastle's LED Downlight Specialists
LED downlights are the single easiest upgrade to make a Newcastle home feel brighter, cleaner and more modern — and they use around 85% less power than the old halogens they replace. Modern tri-colour LEDs let you switch between warm white (3000K, cosy for bedrooms and living), neutral (4000K, great for kitchens and bathrooms) and cool (5000K, perfect for laundries and offices) with a simple dip switch at install time.
We only install IC-4 rated LED downlights, which means they can be safely installed in direct contact with ceiling insulation. This is critical for Newcastle homes with modern batts or blow-in insulation — many older cheap downlights had to be kept clear of insulation, creating cold spots and higher heating bills.
Getting the layout right matters as much as the fitting itself. Too few downlights and you get gloomy corners; too many and the ceiling looks like an airport runway. We built a free downlight spacing calculator that maps the ideal grid for your room, and we use it on every quote to give you a photo-ready result.
For dimmable installs, we use quality Clipsal, HPM or Aurora universal LED-rated dimmers — none of that flicker you get with the wrong dimmer/driver combination. And for bathroom, kitchen or laundry work we install IP44+ rated units and place them the correct distance from showers and wet areas per AS/NZS 3000.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many downlights do I actually need?
As a rough rule: 1 downlight per 1.4m² of floor space for main living areas, spaced 1.2–1.5m apart. Kitchens need more (task lighting); bedrooms less. Use our free downlight position calculator for a room-specific answer.
Why do halogens need to be replaced?
Halogens run at 60–70°C and are a well-known cause of ceiling fires. They also draw 5–10× more power than LEDs. Most Australian insurers now specifically ask about halogens on home policies.
What does IC-4 rated actually mean?
IC-4 is the highest Australian ceiling installation rating. The light can be completely covered with insulation and abutted against timber joists without a heat clearance, dramatically reducing energy loss through your ceiling.
Will my existing dimmer work with LED downlights?
Probably not. Old halogen dimmers cause flicker, buzzing or won't dim below 30%. We always supply a matched LED-rated dimmer to suit the specific driver — a $120 dimmer will save weeks of frustration.
How long do LED downlights last?
Quality LEDs are rated 30,000–50,000 hours (about 15–25 years at 5 hours/day). We fit brands with 5–10 year Australian warranties so you're covered if anything fails early.
Can I add downlights to a plaster ceiling that already has a light in the middle?
Yes — this is one of our most common jobs. We tap off the existing light circuit, run new cable through the roof space, cut new holes and install. Existing pendant/batten holder can stay or be removed and patched.
Are LED downlights bright enough for kitchens?
Absolutely. A modern 9W LED downlight puts out ~900 lumens — brighter than a 60W old-style bulb. In kitchens we typically space more closely for task lighting and often add strip lighting under overhead cabinets.
Do I need building approval to add downlights?
For like-for-like retrofits in an existing residential home, no. For new circuits, structural ceiling changes, or bathroom installations, standard NSW electrical compliance applies (which we handle).
