Switchboard Upgrades Newcastle

If your Newcastle home still has ceramic "rewireable" fuses, it likely dates from the 1970s or earlier — and those fuses have zero earth leakage protection. A faulty appliance, a rat-chewed cable in the roof space, or a wet outdoor point can put lethal current through a person before the fuse ever notices. Modern switchboards use RCDs (residual current devices) that trip in under 40 milliseconds — fast enough to prevent electrocution.

Beyond safety, an upgraded switchboard unlocks everything modern Newcastle homes want: ducted or split-system aircon, an EV charger on its own 32A circuit, solar with export limits properly configured, induction cooktops, and future capacity for the extension you might add later. Trying to add any of these to an old board is patching a Band-Aid onto a Band-Aid.

A typical upgrade takes one working day. We arrange power isolation with Ausgrid where required, strip the old board, install a new enclosure with individual RCBOs on every circuit, replace aged aluminium tails with copper, correctly label every circuit, and hand back a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) that you can supply to insurers.

How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?

Warning signs include ceramic (rewireable) fuses, only one safety switch (or none), aluminium main tails, breakers that trip regularly, a warm or humming board, black scorch marks around fuse holders, or a house older than 1990 that hasn't been upgraded. If in doubt, book a $99 switchboard inspection.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

A standard 6–10 circuit upgrade is completed in one working day (typically 6–8 hours on-site). Power is off for most of that day, so we schedule with your family, and can arrange partial power (essential circuits like fridge) restoration through the middle of the day for larger jobs.

Do I need to be home?

Yes, ideally. We need access to the board (usually inside or in a laundry/garage), and we like to walk you through the finished install and labelling before we leave.

Will an upgraded switchboard reduce my power bill?

Not directly — an upgraded board doesn't itself use less electricity. But it enables you to add solar (which absolutely reduces bills), export-limit properly, and safely run efficient inverter aircon and heat pump hot water that older boards can't support.

Is an RCD the same as a circuit breaker?

No. A circuit breaker (MCB) trips on overload — too much current. An RCD trips on earth leakage — current going where it shouldn't (e.g. through a person). An RCBO combines both in one device. Modern boards have RCBOs on every circuit for maximum safety.

Do I need council approval?

No council approval is required for a like-for-like switchboard upgrade. Ausgrid coordination is only needed for main tail replacement, service upgrades, or 3-phase changes — which we handle end-to-end.

What about my solar system?

We fully coordinate with your solar installer or existing inverter. If we're upgrading the board with existing solar, we isolate the inverter safely, install a dedicated solar isolator on the new board, and re-commission after test. No commissioning fee for solar re-connection during a board upgrade.

Do you supply a Certificate of Compliance?

Yes — every switchboard upgrade includes a NSW Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW), which is required by law and used by insurers. We email you a PDF copy immediately after the job.
